Furniture Sales are Going Strong!

Furniture industry sales momentum continued in September, posting a 12 percent increase from the same month a year ago. Strong consumer demand drove retail sales up 23 percent year over year.

Furniture Brands International, Inc. is trading at $5.48 with 25 percent increase from August; La-Z-Boy Incorporated is $8.37 with 14 percent increase; and even though IKEA is a privately held company, the world’s top furniture retailer posted record sales in its most recent fiscal year. Chief Executive Mikael Ohlsson told Dagens Industri turnover in its fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31 rose to 23.1 billion euro, up some 7.7 percent from the previous period.

We are admittedly never completely satisfied. But it was much better than we had expected and a much better outcome keeping in mind the extremely tough business climate in many markets,” Ohlsson told the paper.

Ohlsson said IKEA wanted to grow further in Russia and China, and is keen to push into markets in South Korea and India.

Labor Day Furniture Deals

Labor Day Weekend – after many hot dogs, picnic baskets, fireworks, and family gatherings, for some that are looking to renovate and perhaps replace their rooms and things, September is a perfect month! The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday proceeding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Traditionally, Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. Originally, the first day of school was also considered the first true Labor Day, and used to begin on the 1st of September in most states. However, because of the weekends, many schools have adopted different dates for the first day of school since 1968.
