Columbus Day 2010 celebrates arrival of the Christopher Columbus in the year 1492 on continent of America. Christopher Columbus landed on island in Caribbean on 12th October, 1492. Columbus Day is celebrated on second Monday in the month of October.

Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937. However, people have celebrated Columbus' voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, New York City and other U.S. cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event. During the four hundredth anniversary, in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress.

Since 1971, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October, coincidentally the same day as Thanksgiving in neighboring Canada (which was fixed to that date in 1959). It is generally observed today by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal Service and other federal agencies, most state government offices, and some school districts. Some businesses and some stock exchanges remain open, also some states and municipalities abstain from observing the holiday.

Furniture Sales are Going Strong!

Furniture industry sales momentum continued in September, posting a 12 percent increase from the same month a year ago. Strong consumer demand drove retail sales up 23 percent year over year.

Furniture Brands International, Inc. is trading at $5.48 with 25 percent increase from August; La-Z-Boy Incorporated is $8.37 with 14 percent increase; and even though IKEA is a privately held company, the world’s top furniture retailer posted record sales in its most recent fiscal year. Chief Executive Mikael Ohlsson told Dagens Industri turnover in its fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31 rose to 23.1 billion euro, up some 7.7 percent from the previous period.

We are admittedly never completely satisfied. But it was much better than we had expected and a much better outcome keeping in mind the extremely tough business climate in many markets,” Ohlsson told the paper.

Ohlsson said IKEA wanted to grow further in Russia and China, and is keen to push into markets in South Korea and India.
