Labor Day Furniture Deals

Labor Day Weekend – after many hot dogs, picnic baskets, fireworks, and family gatherings, for some that are looking to renovate and perhaps replace their rooms and things, September is a perfect month! Many furniture stores will be offering deals on their inventory. But, why is this holiday so closely related to the furniture industry?

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday proceeding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

Traditionally, Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. Originally, the first day of school was also considered the first true Labor Day, and used to begin on the 1st of September in most states. However, because of the weekends, many schools have adopted different dates for the first day of school since 1968.

Furniture City: Grand Rapids, Michigan

During the second half of the 19th century, Grand Rapids became a major lumbering center and the premier furniture manufacturing city of the United States. For this reason it was nicknamed "Furniture City". After an international exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, Grand Rapids became recognized worldwide as a leader in the production of fine furniture. National home furnishing markets were held in Grand Rapids for about 75 years, concluding in the 1960s. Today, Grand Rapids is considered a world leader in the production of office furniture.

Establish a budget - and stick to it.

Credit should not be used to live beyond your means. Creating a budget may not sound like fun, but it is vital to staying out of debt. At Furniture XO, we offer financing options for all qualified shoppers. However, when shopping for furniture, consider items that would be practical first. Your 0% interest has a deadline of up to 12 months. If you plan accordingly and split your purchase into 12 monthly payments, you should have no problems with pesky credit card fees.

Be informed before you buy.

If you are buying furniture for your dorm room, it is recommended to measure your rooms and hallways and make sure your furniture can fit. Most furniture companies will charge you a restocking fee of up to 30% of your purchase total to cover their shipping costs. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our furniture ordering options.

Plan your shopping.

You should shop around for the best deals on anything you will need to purchase while at school. It is also a great practice to compile a "wishlist" for all the items that you may need to purchase and buy everything from one website at one time. Most online stores would be glad to offer some sort of discount for volume orders. When shopping at Furniture XO, you may qualify for many volume order discount programs, including our location based discount.
Be considerate of your roommate, and perhaps you can split the bill.
Dorm living can prove challenging, especially the living-with-strangers part. But take it from those who have gone before: there are stylish ways to divide the space without being divisive, and it doesn't have to cost a lot. Consider shopping for furniture together. It may not only prove to be a rewarding bonding experience, but save you half the budget.

Look out for future Sales.

2010 Furniture Trends from Furniture XO

Furniture XO want to make sure that our customers not only receive the best quality furniture they’ve ever owned, but also keep up to date with all the latest trends coming out in furniture. As we approach the latter half of the year, here are some trends of 2010 to bear in mind:

One of the trends that flipped around for this year was having a brightly colored room with neutral colored accoutrement. The style now is to have a neutral colored room, accessorized with bright colors. One of the popular collections at Furniture XO is the Seaside Dreams Collection. This collections offers a large variety of colorful options for every room – seagrass green and buttercup yellow are perfect colors that have become highly popular. To go along with bright colors, Jodi King of Artistic Interiors by Jodi observed that accessories with floral patterns or Asian influence have been big in 2010 (PDF Link). Items such as the Polynesia Decorative Pillow or the Abstract Cherry Blossom Wall Sculpture really pull any room together.
